Solihull Hospital Energy Centre – University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

RJR Group was appointed as the design and build contractor for the construction of a new energy centre at Solihull Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, on behalf of Centrica and working for G+H.

The project centred on the installation of a 750kW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit, providing a reliable and efficient source of heat and electricity to support the hospital's operational demands while contributing to the Trust's long-term carbon reduction strategy.

Our scope of works included the complete design and construction of the new energy centre, together with all associated civil engineering and utility infrastructure. This included excavation and foundations, reinforced concrete works, drainage, external works, utility diversions and connections, service installations, and high-quality building finishes. We also managed all statutory utility applications, permits and approvals, coordinating closely with the relevant authorities to ensure seamless delivery.

Working within a live healthcare environment required meticulous planning, strict adherence to health and safety standards, and careful coordination to minimise disruption to hospital operations. The completed facility now provides a resilient, energy-efficient solution that supports the hospital's critical infrastructure while helping to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.
